Logbook servicing or a general car service

A logbook service follows the tasks due under your vehicle’s manufacturer schedule. A general service is a workshop-defined package, so its inclusions need to be checked. The label alone does not tell you whether every task due on your car is covered.

Start with the vehicle’s schedule

Maintenance requirements depend on the vehicle and can be triggered by time, kilometres or specified operating conditions. Check the handbook and available service records before choosing a package.

If you are unsure what is due, provide the make, model, year and current kilometres when enquiring. Mention a missed service or any work recently completed elsewhere.

Compare the work included

An oil and filter change can be part of either type of visit. A scheduled service may also require inspections or other maintenance items that are outside a basic package.

When comparing quotes, ask which tasks are included, which parts and fluids are specified, and how the work will be recorded. If one quote covers substantially less work, the headline prices do not represent the same service.

Check warranty conditions

Manufacturer warranty requirements and extended-warranty conditions can differ. The ACCC explains the importance of meeting servicing standards and checking the relevant warranty terms. Read the ACCC’s guidance.

Choose your next step

For work due under the manufacturer’s schedule, enquire about logbook servicing. If you are considering a limited oil and filter service, confirm that you understand which other maintenance tasks remain due.
