What affects the cost of a car service

A useful car-service quote describes the work being priced. Vehicle specification, the service interval and package inclusions all affect the total. Comparing only the headline price can hide important differences in scope.

The service that is due

Your car may be due for different tasks at different intervals. An oil change package and a more extensive scheduled service can therefore have different prices for the same vehicle.

Provide your kilometres, age of the vehicle and available service history so the due work can be discussed.

Parts, fluids and specifications

The quantity and required specification of engine oil can vary. Filters and other parts also differ between vehicles. A quote should account for suitable products rather than assume that every car can use the same package.

If an advertised offer starts from a particular price, check the eligible vehicles, quantity limits and any other conditions beside that price.

Existing faults and additional work

A routine service does not automatically include diagnosing every reported problem. Tell the workshop about warning lights, leaks or other concerns when booking. Ask whether investigation is included or needs a separate allowance.

Before further work is authorised, make sure you understand the recommendation and its cost.

Questions to ask when comparing quotes

  • Which scheduled tasks are included?
  • What oil, parts and labour does the price cover?
  • Are unavoidable fees included in the total?
  • How will any extra work be discussed and approved?
  • What service record or invoice will I receive?

Australian consumer price displays must make the total price clear, including applicable taxes and unavoidable charges. ACCC price-display guidance.
